What makes us unique?

What makes us unique is how we view others! We believe everyone is a unique individual with a unique story and unique experiences behind them. From these experiences, comes unique knowledge and identity. Our job is to capture you and your identity. Every part of you tells a story; every curve, every scar, every mark. Our process allows us to get to know you before your session so we have a better understanding of how you view yourself and how you want to be captured during your session. This personal and positive self-reflective experience is what makes us truly unique when it comes to a boudoir experience. Being non-binary I am also knowledgable on posing a variety of body types, in a variety of ways; whether you want to look delicate, feminine, or strong and a bit more masc, we got you covered either way!

Why Dead Name Studios?

Dead Name: the birth name of a transgender person who has changed their name as part of their gender transition.

Our former business name, DNdark was based upon my own dead name. In the summer of 2022, I legally changed my name as part of my transition, it felt weird keeping my old name as such a big part of my life in my photography business so I knew we needed a change. I wanted to keep the association of the old business name as I've worked hard to built a reputable brand locally but still stay true to my current self; Dead Name Studios came to mind instantly and easily, now the DN stands for Dead Name instead of my "dead name"!

What kinds of unique experiences lead me to where I am today?

Since I'll be asking you a lot about your unique story; I'll let you in on a  bit of mine...

Unique experiences make for unique knowledge. So many of my life experiences have shaped the way I view others, how I interact with them and how I capture them.

Here's some life experiences I've had and the lessons they've taught me when it comes to being a boudoir photographer:

Gymnastics

What 7 years of learning and coaching taught me:

-flexibility (literal and metaphorical)

-overcoming mental blocks

-body awareness/ movement (posing fundamental!)

-pointed toes (I will ALWAYS notice in posing)

-working hard to achieve goals (much needed for small business owners)

Piano

What 15+ years of lessons taught me:

-how music evokes emotion

-using music as motivation

-rhythm and movement

-active listening

-practice makes improvement (not perfection)

Working with Children

Coached gymnastics for years, also a registered ECE:

-how to go with the flow and adapt

-how to explain things many different ways

-different learning styles (still applies in adulthood)

-patience

-understanding

Trauma

A lifetime of body and self-image issues, along with some other stuff

-everyone has something they're dealing with

-be kind to everyone

-never assume you know someone's story

-speak up for yourself; no one will do it for you

-we appreciate light more in the darkness (consistent theme in my photography)

-know your worth and value yourself accordingly

-self-image can be drastically altered with a different perspective (like through a camera lens!)

Why Boudoir?

My own self-image and identity  is something I've always struggled with, especially after becoming a parent then again when I discovered more about my own gender identity. The genre of boudoir photography is something I stumbled upon years ago and fell in love with. Taking my own photos completely changed my perspective of myself and my body and continues to do so while I continue discovering who I am. This feeling; this new found self-love was something I wanted to share with everyone I could  because I know so many others struggle with body-image issues as well. Spreading the message of loving yourself quickly spills over into a more positive perception of those around you as well. We're all about building up ourselves and others so we try our best to achieve that through the magical genre of Boudoir Photography!
